• MarbleFINISHES

Marble is one of the most popular materials, both for home’s interior and exterior. For a space that is elegant and worthy of being shown to all, marble is always the best choice.

In this article, we discuss the marble finishes that are most popular and appreciated by customers and industry professionals.

 The most popular marble finishes

There are many different marble finishes, and each of them allows for a very particular and different result. Knowing how to recognize them can help you understand what you prefer and what most respects your tastes and needs.

Here, however, is what is important to know before you start. First of all, each process corresponds to a different result, so in some cases you will get extremely different results-for example, a matte or glossy surface-while in others you may see some similarity.

Another thing to know concerns the use of processed marble: each result lends itself to certain uses, which are perfectly in line with its characteristics.

Let us now take a look at the main marble processes and finishes.

Marble finishes smoothing

This process is reminiscent of polishing, but with one difference: the end result is a dull, porous surface, not a glossy one.

This finish is achieved with abrasive wheels equipped with increasing fineness, which allow the surface to be smooth but not as polished as polishing.

Marble bush-hammering

Consists of impact machining by which a sculpted surface can be obtained. Combining it with brushing results in a rustic-style marble slab. It is a material that can be used both as an anti-slip material and as an exterior cladding.

Marble polishing

Marble polishing is the most popular technique among end users and the most widely used. This popularity is due to the fact that this finish contributes to the proverbial beauty of marble slabs. It is thanks to this type of processing that marble releases all its elegance and light.

The polished finish of marble is achieved by using gradually finer and finer abrasives, until the surface is able to reflect light and is perfectly smooth, emanating great luminosity.

Through this process, the marble’s pores tend to close, giving it greater protection from external agents.

Marble finishes brushing

Brushing marble allows for a worn surface, as if we were looking at an old slab that has been used before. The result? A marble with a history behind it.

This type of marble is achieved by using special abrasive brushes. which can be applied to the machinery used for polishing. The action of these brushes tends to intensify in places where the material is softer, resulting in an irregular, polished surface.

Flaming

Consists of a heat treatment using high temperatures. In this process a series of oxyhydrogen flames strike the outermost layer of the marble slab, causing its partial detachment. Following this initial thermal shock, rapid cooling with water is carried out, causing further detachment of small flakes.

The flamed finish allows the marble to be used outdoors, thanks mainly to the non-slip surface that is created after processing.

Marble sandblasting

When sandblasting is done on marble, it gives its surface an anti-slip characteristic. This aspect makes it perfect for use both indoors and outdoors.

The process is very simple. A jet of water and sand hits the part to be treated with an adjustable speed, thus producing an even abrasion. At the end of the treatment, the marble is rough to the touch and slightly scratched.

Acid etching

In this finish, acids intervene on the surface of the marble slab, corroding it and creating an antique, rough-looking finish. Here the classic veining of the marble is brought out.

It should be pointed out that this intervention cannot be carried out on all marbles, but only on the softer ones. In fact, the final effect is closely related to the hardness of the material itself.

  • ViteNove

Today we want to introduce you to Vite Nove, a fascinating art exhibition for which we had the opportunity to be one of the sponsoring partners. We are really happy to have had the opportunity to sponsor such an expressive and elegantly nuanced event.

Vite Nove: artistic vocation and the parallelism of one’s lives

The exhibition Vite Nove recalls, first of all, Dante’s Vita Nova, with a different meaning and nuance than the content connected to the love poetry of this literary masterpiece.

Every artist who intimately lives his or her Art as a predestined vocation, builds in his or her creative achievement a true other life. A life that runs parallel to his daily existence. A kind of ideal dimension within which it is possible to express a rebirth, an inner renewal. It all contributes to approaching that pure Consciousness which is the ultimate goal of the earthly path.

And this is precisely where the art exhibition Vite Nove (Nine Lives) fits in, highlighting the paths of two artists who are living a dual, augmented reality.

The first of these is a conventional life, while the second is dictated by deep and secret reasons. Over time these have become inescapable, necessary, suggested perhaps by that hypothetical Alter that inhabits the spiritual and psychic world.

In the end each of us yearns and desires a new life, an inner space formed of crystal clear air and true light, where we can simply be ourselves. It is Milani’s out-of-time contaminations or Sandra Zeugna’s transnational scenes that support this exhortation within Nature and history, and at the same time outside of them, surrendering to very private dimensions guarded by the infinite reasons of the Heart.

The protagonists of Vite Nove

Sandra Zeugna

Sandra Zeugna was born in Trieste in 1958. She began her artistic activity as a self-taught artist, but later decided to attend two workshops of famous Trieste masters. Here a strong mutual artistic exchange takes place.

She has participated in numerous group exhibitions, earning several awards and mentions. Among them, in 2005, at the “Premio Agazzi” of the Province of Bergamo, she received the 2nd prize with the silver medal of the Chamber of Deputies out of 950 works presented, in 2006 at the “International Drawing Prize” in Triste she was the winner out of 70 selected works. The artist has staged several solo exhibitions, including the Tartaglia Gallery in Rome, the A.P.T. Di Grado, Il Palazzo Veneziano in Malborghetto, the Galleria d’arte Contemporanea in Trieste, the Sant’Isaia Gallery in Bologna, and the L’Escale Gallery in Spilimbergo. She has also been a guest in various municipal venues and officially commissioned to set up a solo exhibition in conjunction with the 2003 Winter Universiade in Tarvisio.

From 2005 to 2011, Sandra Zeugna was present at Arte Fiera Padova and Reggio Emilia. In 2018 she exhibited an anthological exhibition entitled “Ratio Dubii” at Spazio 212 in Bologna with the collaboration of Campogrande Concept. • Black marble: ideas and tips for decorating your home

Black marble is one of the most elegant and refined types of marble available. It is mainly used for wall and floor coverings and furnishings, and creates a strong stylistic impact due to its refined appearance, polished surface and distinctive veining.

In this article, we will take a closer look at the characteristics of black marble, how to use it to decorate your home, and how to keep it shiny and clean at all times.

Black marble: origin and variations

Black marble is obtained as a result of a particularly long and articulated natural process of sedimentary rocks.

Its dark color is due to the presence of many mineral elements, and it is enriched with distinctive reddish, gold or white veins. It is these minerals that mix together and create these unique effects.

To meet your every request, we at MGS Italy offer these variations of black marble:

  • Arabescato Orobico Black;
  • Bianconero;
  • Black Kafè;
  • Nero Antico;
  • Nero Levanto;

Black marble: a choice of luxury and elegance

Black marble is a symbol of style, class and unbridled luxury, used in the creation of furniture accessories and to cover floors and walls.

The power of this type of marble is precisely to give a unique, elegant and sophisticated style to any room. The dark color makes it particularly bright and shiny, just like a mirror. The perfect material to enhance any detail.

Ideas and tips for decorating your home with black marble

Originally, black marble was used to cover floors and walls of luxury, or otherwise particularly large houses. Now black marble can also be used in kitchens, bedrooms, or for furnishings in any room and in any home. A precious detail within everyone’s reach.

So here are the best ideas for decorating your home using black marble.

Floor covering

Floor covering represents the main use of black marble. Covering the floor with this type of marble is a recommended choice for large finely furnished rooms, and for all those homes that aspire to become an example of extreme luxury.

Just as in the home where every single detail has value and makes a difference, as well as in a loft in a big city, black marble flooring embodies the essence of a cozy base where one can experiment with a wide variety of style ideas. Design, elegant, sophisticated or classic styles unfold to perfection thanks to the presence of black marble. In any case, our advice is to always maintain a certain sobriety in the decor, trying not to overindulge with contrasting combinations and very different colors. Black marble is perfect for clean, understated styles, even if they are very luxurious.

Kitchen

The use of black marble in the kitchen is one of the most practical and popular choices, despite the fact that it is still not a particularly popular solution. Being a material that is not afraid of wear and tear, where in an environment such as the kitchen it becomes a winning choice for flooring, backsplash or countertop. Black marble is well suited to minimal and designer environments, but it is also ideal for more rustic settings.

A winning combo in the kitchen is the combination of white doors and a marble top, especially if it features light veins that create continuity with the rest of the kitchen. If, on the other hand, you have a kitchen that opens onto the living and dining area, our advice is to use gray and beige, two softer colors that go better with the rest of the decor.

Bedroom

Using black marble in the bedroom can certainly be a risky choice, but one with great impact. In any case, it is always better not to exaggerate, especially if the room is not very spacious.

Our advice is to avoid using black marble for the floor in the sleeping area, but it is better to opt for furniture complements, such as a low coffee table.

Another solution that does not weigh down the room too much is the black marble wall behind the bed. To give balance to the room, leave the other walls white and choose textile elements – linens, rugs, curtains – in light colors.

Black marble furnitures

Black marble furnitures are particularly mesmerizing and fascinating.

Let’s take a few examples.
Black marble tables become the undisputed masters of any room, while the console table made of this material transforms the living room or entrance hall into an elegant oasis.

Remember that very often these are wooden structures, only covered in marble. If not, they would be very difficult and heavy to move or transport.

How to clean black marble

Black marble has so many advantages, such as giving luxury and elegance to any room. One of the very few disadvantages of black marble is its porosity: it absorbs liquids and can stain even irreversibly.

Therefore, home care and room selection are key aspects if you want to keep marble polished and perfectly shiny. To achieve a good polish, our advice is to use specific products, indicated for the treatment of this material. Alternatively, you can use a wool cloth, as it respects the marble and enhances its shine, avoiding creating any kind of scratch.

  • Marble, Travertine, Granite and Quartzite: what are the differences?

Whether in modern buildings or in old houses, in public places or in private homes, you will very rarely notice the absence of natural stones in a room.

In fact, they have always been used both outdoors and indoors and play the multifaceted role of building materials and decorative elements of value.

Natural stones, however, are not all the same. Each of them has its own characteristics that respond to certain functions and needs.

In this article, we will discuss precisely the most widely used natural stones and their specific characteristics.

Marble: a noble material that comes from afar

Marble is a material that has always been used in the construction of both public and private buildings.

It is a rock of metamorphic origin, composed mainly of calcium carbonate and characterized by a very fine grain.  Marble is among the most prestigious and most widely used materials since ancient times. Ancient Greece, for example, was the protagonist of some of the most beautiful marble monuments ever made, such as the temples of the Acropolis of Athens in the fifth century BC.

What characterizes this extraordinary natural stone is the low refractive index of calcite, of which it is largely composed, which allows light to pass through the surface of the stone, giving the marble a special luminosity.

Travertine: another great classic of architecture

Travertine is among the most classic materials used in architecture, so much so that in ancient times the Romans made it the undisputed protagonist of the monuments of Rome. Perhaps not everyone knows, in fact, that the Romans extracted millions of cubic meters of travertine: records show that the front of the quarry in Tivoli was more than two kilometers wide!

Travertine is a sedimentary rock, formed as a result of deposits of carbonate rocks over time. Its structure is irregular and contains vacuoles that lend themselves to grouting, depending on the finish you want to achieve.

What characterizes travertine is its strength and versatility as well as its resistance to external agents: it is, in fact, a natural stone perfect for both indoor and outdoor solutions and in high humidity environments such as bathrooms and kitchens.

Granite: hardness and beauty in a single stone

Everyone knows the saying “as hard as granite”. But is this really the most important characteristic of this rock?

Granite is a volcanic rock of intrusive origin; this means that it was formed by magmatic material that cooled and solidified in the earth’s crust. It is mainly formed by silicates; this is the reason for its hardness, definitely higher than that of marble and travertine.

Its name, however, derives from its granular structure. Among its most significant characteristics, in fact, we must mention its insensitivity to acids and water, which makes it the ideal material for kitchen worktops.

There are also granites of different colors: white granite, for example, is present in large quantities in Italy and is characterized by a compact texture and, sometimes, with streaks tending to gray. Black granite, on the other hand, is a natural stone extracted in South Africa whose color makes it perfect for interior coverings and luxury bathrooms.

Quartzite: for those who can’t decide between marble and granite

Quartzite is a metamorphic stone, formed when sand is heated and compressed within the earth.

It is a natural stone that stands out above all for its resistance to abrasion and attacks from external agents such as pollution and temperature changes.

Often quartzite is confused with quartz: the latter, however, is composed of oxygen and silicon and can be defined as a crystalline rock and not metamorphic.

  • Italian marble: unique beauty in the world

Used for millions of years, marble has brought to light unique mottling, colors and luster. In particular, Italian marble is a natural and unique material that can enhance any environment. Italy is, in fact, among the countries that export the most marble in the world and is everywhere considered to be of the highest quality. Pietra di Trani, Portoro, Rosso Verona, Bardiglio, Calacatta and Bianco di Carrara are just some of the marbles for which Italy is known throughout the world.

Italian marble is then universally considered synonymous with elegance, purity and luxury, so much so that it is seen as an international status symbol for the interior cladding of boutiques, hotels and residences. The association of Italian marble with the concept of luxury is mainly due to its exceptional finesse and quality.

Precisely for these reasons, Italian marble is still today the stone most loved by designers, architects and artists. In this in-depth study we will see some examples of how Italian marble has been used in the world of art in general and how it is still able to arouse charm and beauty.

Marble in Italy

Italians have always been considered masters of marble quarrying and processing.

Thanks to its particular luster, its mottling, its color and the possibility of working it in many different ways, marble is a material that has always been loved by designers, architects and artists.

However, there are many historical materials still in production and used in representative churches and monuments. A first example is Jasper marble, a red marble of Sicilian origin and very valuable. Sumptuous and elegant, for centuries it has been used to adorn royal palaces, religious buildings and cathedrals. The peculiarity of this marble is represented by its surface and the explosion of bright and vivid colors. To further embellish the Red Jasper are the white veins that run across its surface, highlighting even more the multitude of colors.

Another example is Brèche de Vendôme. This type of marble is characterized by a beautiful mixture of colorful colors among which we find golden yellow, dark green, black and dark red. Thanks also to the use of innovative techniques, this special breccia takes on a brilliant polish. Brèche de Vendôme has been widely used in France, especially to embellish some of the most beautiful churches and palaces of Paris. Today it is mainly indicated for the realization of interior coverings when the objective is to have fantastic chromatic effects in front of the eyes.

As a last example it is right to talk about Irish green, a marble characterized by unique green tones, non-uniform coloring and shades ranging from dark to light. This stone was mainly used by Renaissance architects in order to flood palaces with magnificent works with shades of forests and fields. Even today those same works are admired by tourists from all over the world. The Irish Green, thanks to its variegated veins, allows to realize new geometries, making every project absolutely unique and unrepeatable.

Florence Cathedral: a unique floor

One of the perhaps lesser-known wonders of Florence Cathedral is its floor, which is a unique example in terms of variety of design, richness, materials and dimensions.

Its history is particularly long and complex. Since the first years of his reign – and for the whole of its duration – the first Grand Duke Cosimo I promoted some important works of renovation of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. The works did not aim at a radical transformation, but at covering the building with a new skin. What before was an austere aspect of the Cathedral, gave way to a rich polychromy of statues, plastic decorations of wall paintings but above all of marbles. In this building site – which lasted several years – a central role in the project was played by the renovation of the floor, which included the replacement of the old terracotta with a carpet of marble inlays with a geometric design.

Michelangelo and his relationship with Carrara

Although he didn’t leave any work in Carrara, Michelangelo Buonarroti had always a very close relationship with the town, so that he stayed there several times to visit the quarries frequently in order to personally choose the marbles that would have given life to his works.

In the collective imagination Michelangelo and Carrara are seen as two entities strictly and indissolubly linked together. Moreover, for quarrymen the possibility to have the artist close meant to deal with an exceptional customer, especially because the quantities he ordered were always very large – which should not be surprising given the greatness of the artistic enterprises he was called to accomplish.

Bernini: a story of creative freedom

Gian Lorenzo Bernini is undoubtedly the artist who, more than anyone else, managed to change not only the face of Rome, but also the art of his time. Among his most famous works are Apollo and Daphne, Aeneas and Anchises and the bust of Paul V at the Borghese.

Bernini was a well-rounded artist: architect, painter, sculptor and also set designer. When he was only eight years old he began to handle the chisel, when he made a small head of a cherub. However, a few years were enough to win the esteem of the most powerful lords of the continent.

That of Gian Lorenzo Bernini is nothing but a story of creative freedom and passions. That same freedom will allow him to touch the highest peaks of art history, giving posterity real masterpieces of incredible beauty and relevance.

Why choose a natural stone floor

Choosing flooring and cladding for your home is not always easy. Most of the time we tend to exclude the use of natural stone, because it is considered a particularly fragile material and difficult to maintain.

In reality this is not the case at all! The important thing is to choose the right stone for the different uses, in this way you can use it in any environment since it is a durable and robust material – to emphasize its great ability to withstand very heavy loads – able to give any room of the house a feeling of naturalness.

Nowadays, stone cladding is becoming more and more popular for both interior and exterior surfaces. Its peculiar artistic and technical characteristics make it one of the most sought-after materials.

In this article we will take a closer look at what are the main characteristics that make this type of stone unique, but above all the reasons why you should consider using it for the floors of your rooms.

Natural stone: what it is and its characteristics

Its technical characteristics – resistance and strength – are perfectly combined with the aesthetic ones, which only a precious material like natural stone can guarantee. In fact, with this material it is possible to give shape to countless decorations and visual effects, according to the imagination of the installer and/or the client. The combinations can be many, but the result will always be the same: the uniqueness of your environment.

Types and uses of natural stone

There are several types of natural stone that are used in the building industry, which differ from each other for specific peculiarities of resistance and hardness, but all have in common an excellent aesthetic performance.

Generally the stones used for external and internal coverings are the following:

  • Quartzite, a metamorphic rock;
  • Marble, a metamorphic rock, mainly composed of calcium carbonate;
  • Granite, of volcanic origin;
  • Porfid, which results from the cooling of lava;
  • Basalt, of lava origin.

Thanks to its characteristics of resistance, strength and aesthetic beauty, natural stone can really be used in different environments, without ever losing its value.

As far as interior uses are concerned, this type of stone is able to give a particular sense of elegance and natural feeling. There are so many decorative motifs that can be made with natural stone, so it is possible to customize any type of environment, so as to create combinations with the many facets of different architectural styles – from rustic architecture to more classic and modern environments.

The naturalness of this material is also synonymous with diversity, as stones can have heterogeneous colors and sizes, as well as different finishes.

On the other hand, as far as external coverings are concerned, its characteristics of hardness and compactness make natural stone perfect for paving, pathways, gazebos, for decorating gardens and for covering non-covered swimming pools. Our advice is to use an opaque stone for environments that are not very sunny.

In any case, the different types of stone are able to give a unique effect to the environments in which they are used. In this sense, the marble is most commonly used for the lining of interiors, and helps to give a feeling of classicism and sumptuousness. To give a sense of regularity and sobriety are used instead of marble cut into a small format with a variety of shapes.

  • The timeless beauty of a marble floor

In the furnishing of a house the floor – especially a marble floor – takes on a fundamental importance. It represents, in fact, the business card of a home that is respected, as well as giving practicality and functionality to the environment.

In particular, a marble floor is able to give every room of the house that extra touch that can make the difference. The same term Màrmaros, in ancient Greek means “shining stone”. Marble is in fact a metamorphic stone that has the ability to reflect light in various ways, resulting translucent and clear. Since ancient times, there have been many methods used to extract marble from quarries and enjoy this beautiful material.

However, choosing which shade of marble to use in your floors is not easy, especially considering that the various furnishings will necessarily have to follow the environment created by this precious material.

In this guide you will find everything you need to know about how to decorate the floor of your home with marble, making your spaces truly unique.

Marble flooring: quality and beauty of a natural stone

Marble is considered one of the most valuable stones in the world, mainly because there are many varieties, from the most classic to the rarest. Its eternal beauty comes mainly from its color – which most often also determines its degree of value – but also from the arrangement and quantity of veining, as well as the degree of compactness of the surface.

In interior design projects, the beauty of marble and natural stone are unique and unparalleled: wall and floor coverings made of marble for interiors are really able to masterfully adapt to the different styles of the house, always giving a unique and timeless elegance to any type of environment. Among the advantages of choosing marble, therefore, is its majesty and its being so gorgeous in its natural state.

Contrary to what you may think, marble is impact and scratch resistant and if treated with waterproofing products it is not so porous as to retain stains.

As we have already mentioned, the use of marble must absolutely be accompanied by a decor that is in line with its peculiarities. In fact, there are various finishes and colors, so that the appearance of the house can change considerably, and therefore also the furniture.

How to furnish home with a marble floor?

Furnishing home with marble means creating a classy and elegant environment.

In general, black marble – or in any case dark – is ideal for furnishing large spaces, especially those in classical or baroque style. Even modern homes with large windows or designer mirrors, enriched by lots of natural light and light-colored furnishings, can show off a dark marble floor.

White marble, on the other hand, fits very well in more contemporary homes, especially when combined with innovative materials such as steel or glass, which give the entire environment shine. In this case, modern marble floors are the ideal solution.

If you want a home a little more eccentric, the shades and veining can be the protagonists, with even very strong colors for a more pop style.

In the living room

In its different shades of white, marble perfectly matches a living room with large windows and innovative and contemporary elements. On the other hand, in a living room with a marble floor on the beige shade, classic furniture in dark wood is perfect.

If you prefer a marble with shades of green and red, modern style furniture and decorations are suitable.

In any case, marble itself is a fundamental element of furniture, so if it is black or white and basically uniform, you can choose a minimalist style of furniture, thus letting the floor become the protagonist of the living room.

In the bathroom

Classic and elegant, marble is one of the most used materials for the interior of a contemporary or luxury bathroom.

White marble turns out to be very versatile, and in the bathroom it can be thought of both for wall and floor coverings. In fact, it can be the basic element of any type of design, from minimal to Nordic.

You could also opt for a black and white combination, creating in this way optical illusions that thanks to minimalism are able to make your bathroom seem larger.

For an elegant and more refined touch, an excellent solution is to choose warm shades of antique pink for some furnishing accessories, opting for a type of white marble enriched with golden veins.

In the bedroom

If you have decided to use marble also for your bedroom, to avoid a cold effect of the environment, the advice is to choose warm colors not only for the floor, but also for the furniture and upholstery.

Remember that white marble, fits perfectly with the most modern styles, black or dark marble is indicated in very spacious and well-lit rooms – the ideal decor is traditional and classic -, while a beige marble or warm tones go perfectly with pastel colored upholstery, wood and floral patterns – perfect for your bedroom.
